Train the mind the way you train the body
The physical side of sport is coached consistently. Technique, fitness, tactics, on repetition. The mental side is often left to an individual’s natural capability. Yet at every level, from developing juniors to elite competitors, the difference between a good performance and a great one is between the ears. It's whether an athlete can stay composed under pressure, recover quickly from a mistake, and consistently access their best self when it matters most.
We are never not feeling an emotion. How we feel shapes how we behave, and how we behave shapes how we perform. Learning to understand and manage your emotional state is a genuine skill and like any skill, it can be taught, practised and mastered.
That's what our Performance Mindset work is all about.
What happens when the mental game gets left to chance
You’ve probably seen athletes or teams with all the physical tools, undone by what happens between the ears:
- Talented athletes who nail it in training but freeze under pressure when competing
- Inconsistent performance from week to week
- Players who lose confidence after one mistake and the dominos start to fall
- Athletes who allow outside impacts to come with them onto the field
- Team cohesion that breaks down under the strain of competition
This is what happens when the mental game isn’t coached with the same rigour as the physical one.

What is Performance Mindset?
Performance Mindset is a practical, evidence-based approach to developing the mental skills athletes need to perform under pressure. Rather than relying on motivational theory or generic “positive thinking”, we give athletes concrete tools they can apply immediately, in training and in competition, to manage nerves, recover from setbacks, hold their focus and perform with confidence when the stakes are highest.
Our approach draws on emotional intelligence, neuroscience and practical mind-training techniques (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), translated from more than two decades of leadership and performance work with high-performing organisations into the world of sport. It's grounded in the science of how the brain and body respond to pressure, and delivered through hands-on, experiential learning that sticks.
The result is athletes who understand themselves, take ownership of their development, and have a personal toolkit they can rely on when the moment demands it.
Our Approach
Building a performance mindset isn't a one-off talk or a motivational session. It's a deliberate process, integrated slowly and systematically so the changes are real and lasting. Four principles guide everything we do:
Simple. Mindset work is introduced gradually across a number of sessions. We start by building awareness — helping athletes understand what’s happening for them under pressure and recognise that each of them is unique in what they need.
Agile. Every step meets athletes where they are, based on their readiness to take on the approach. This ensures the work lands, embeds and lasts well beyond our time together.
Diverse. We are all different in why we compete, how we approach the contest and what we bring to the team. The work honours that individuality while strengthening the shared experience and cohesion of the group.
Accountable. Athletes take responsibility for their own development. Just as they’d practise a skill or drill, they’re expected to rehearse the mental tools designed for them — because that’s how new habits become second nature.
Ways to Work Together
We offer Performance Mindset support in whatever format suits you best: individually, as a team, as a one-off for a group, or across an entire season.
- Season-long programs. For the deepest impact, we embed with a playing group across a full season. The complete program is delivered progressively with planning, customisation and ongoing reinforcement so the mental skills are practised, refined and genuinely embedded under real training and match conditions.
- Group and team programs. Delivered to a squad or playing group, these sessions build both individual skill and collective culture. Teams learn to regulate emotion, support one another under pressure and create the shared conditions they need to succeed together.
- One-off sessions. Any of the components of our program can be delivered as a single, self-contained session; a practical introduction to mindset, a focused workshop on a particular skill, or a targeted piece of work ahead of a big fixture.
- One-on-one private sessions. Focused, confidential work tailored to a single athlete. Ideal for competitors who want to develop their mental game with individual attention. This could be building a personal resourceful state (the calm, focused headspec where an athlete performs at their best), working through the pressures specific to their role, and creating a toolkit designed entirely around them.
Every engagement begins with a conversation about your athletes, your goals and your context, so the work is designed with you, for you.
About Ros Batson
Ros Batson is a recognised expert in emotional intelligence, an NLP Master Practitioner, and holds a Master's degree in Organisational Culture. Over the past 25 years she has designed and facilitated leadership, culture and performance programs for organisations across Australia. Her approach combines evidence-based psychology, emotional intelligence, neuroscience and NLP with highly practical, experiential learning to develop the mindset required for sustained performance.
Away from the corporate world, Ros has a genuine passion for sport and the development of athletes. Her years as a coach, volunteer and administrator gave her a first-hand understanding of the mental demands of competition and the challenges facing developing athletes. Coaching a premiership-winning junior team reinforced her belief that success is as much about team cohesion, emotional regulation, confidence, resilience and decision-making as it is about technical skill.
Ros's programs bridge the gap between the neuroscience of high-performance and the realities of sport. Rather than relying on theory alone, athletes learn practical tools they can apply immediately to manage pressure, recover from setbacks, maintain confidence and perform consistently when it matters most. Her engaging, interactive style ensures every session is relevant, practical and directly transferable to competition.

Frequently Asked Questions About Performance Mindset
There is a good deal you can observe, provided you agree at the outset what you are looking for.
A season-long program is where we see the deepest impact, because building a performance mindset is not a one-off talk.
Scepticism is common and we take it as a fair starting position.
Yes. The pressure an athlete feels in the moments before they perform is remarkably consistent.
Dumping strategies give athletes a structured way to clear mental clutter so they can return to the next moment with clarity and control.
Blog Posts About Performance Mindset
Cricket is a game of pauses - between deliveries and overs, at the fall of a wicket, and in the long walk back to the boundary - the game is full of gaps. Those gaps are where the mental side of cricket is won and lost, because a gap is exactly where an unhelpful thought moves in and makes itself at home.
Every cricketer knows the feeling of a day when everything just works. The ball looks like a beach ball. The feet move without being told. The mind is quiet and the game feels slow. And every cricketer knows the frustration of not being able to find that feeling again the following week.
Ask a cricketer where a game is won or lost and most will point somewhere physical: the technique, the fitness, the hours in the nets. Almost nobody points to their breathing. Yet the breath is the one tool a player carries onto the field in every format, in every condition, at every level and most have never been taught how to use it.
