What if our athletes are sceptical about mindset work?

Scepticism is common and we take it as a fair starting position. Most athletes have sat through a motivational talk at some point, felt something for about a fortnight, and watched it evaporate. If that is their reference point for mindset work then resistance is a reasonable response rather than a problem to be overcome.

We deal with it by being practical from the first minute. Rather than opening with theory or asking athletes to talk about their feelings in front of the group, we start with awareness of something they already recognise, and we give them a tool that works. Athletes tend to move from sceptical to curious once they have used something and felt it land.

The Agile principle matters here too. Every step meets athletes where they are, based on their readiness. We do not push a group into sophisticated NLP work because it is week four of the plan. We go at the pace the group can genuinely absorb, which is precisely why the work embeds and lasts well beyond our time together.
