What are Dumping Strategies and why do athletes need them?

Sport is full of pauses, resets and moments to overthink. Dumping strategies give athletes a structured way to clear mental clutter so they can return to the next moment with clarity and control, rather than dragging the last five minutes along with them.

The clutter is familiar to anyone who has competed. It is the replayed mistake that keeps running, the lingering frustration at a decision that went against you, the worry about selection that has nothing to do with the ball about to be delivered. None of it helps and all of it occupies attention that the next moment needs.

What makes a dumping strategy work is that it is deliberate and physical, a specific action the athlete takes rather than a vague instruction to forget about it. Telling an athlete to move on is useless advice. Giving them a rehearsed sequence they can execute in the ten seconds available to them is a skill they can actually use.
