Should we certify a whole team in the EQ-i 2.0, or is one practitioner enough?
Certifying a whole team, rather than a single practitioner, changes what the EQ-i 2.0 can do inside an organisation. A lone certified person can run debriefs, whereas a certified team can build capability. There’s a great deal of value in that shift.
The common thread across every function is shared language. Once a team is certified, emotional intelligence stops being an abstract idea and becomes a working vocabulary that people use in the same way, with the same definitions, across coaching conversations, feedback, selection decisions and program design. That kind of consistency is difficult to manufacture any other way, and it is what allows emotional intelligence to genuinely embed in an organisation.
There are several benefits that apply broadly, whatever the function.
The first is internal capability and self-sufficiency. Certified teams can administer and debrief the assessment themselves and deliver their own emotional intelligence programs, rather than depending on an external provider for every cohort. This is the build internal capability model NNC uses with clients. We certify a number of your people, help you design tailored programs, and run train-the-trainer so the organisation can embed learning independently, while still having ongoing support to draw on when you need it.
The second is scale and cost efficiency. With several certified practitioners, an organisation can debrief many more people, run group sessions, and reach a whole leadership pipeline without carrying the per-debrief cost of outsourcing everything.
The third is peer learning. A certified cohort supports one another's interpretation and application of the tool, which lifts the quality and confidence of how it is used over time. People learn as much from comparing notes with colleagues as they do from the certification itself.
For learning and development teams specifically, certification opens up a few things that are more difficult and costly to access otherwise. Your team can design and deliver emotional intelligence programs tailored to your own context. They can map the EQ-i 2.0 against your existing Leadership Capability Framework, identifying which subscales support a given capability and which combinations might derail it. And they can build emotional intelligence into onboarding, leadership programs and coaching in a consistent way. Just as importantly, it gives you a credible way to measure development over time, rather than assuming a program worked.
For recruitment and selection, certification allows your team to recruit for the specific emotional intelligence strengths a role actually requires, and to build a predictive model of your top performers by identifying the capabilities that distinguish high performers in your organisation. Applied consistently across a selection panel or assessment centre, it adds a scientific, defensible layer to decisions that might otherwise lean on gut feel. Several NNC clients have gone further and made the EQ-i 2.0 a formal part of internal promotion processes, using it to check whether candidates have the influence and diplomacy capabilities needed to step up from management into senior leadership.
One caveat: the value can only be truly realised if certification is coupled with a plan to use it. Certifying a team and then not embedding the tool into real processes is where organisations tend to see little return. That is exactly why the step of mapping the tool to your own capability language and integrating it into business-as-usual matters as much as the certification itself, and it is the part we work through with you rather than leaving you to figure out alone.
If you are weighing up how many people to certify and how to embed the tool once they are, that is a conversation worth having early. Reach out and we can talk it through against what your organisation is trying to achieve.
