What role does emotional intelligence play in athletic performance?
Emotional intelligence is the foundation everything else in our program is built on, because an athlete cannot manage a state they cannot notice. The first and most important shift is awareness: recognising what is actually happening for them under pressure, and understanding that the frustration, nerves or flatness they feel are information rather than obstacles.
Once that awareness is in place, the practical applications open up quickly.
- Self-awareness. Athletes identify their own peak-performance states and, just as importantly, the states that derail them and the triggers that lead there.
- Self-management. They learn to interrupt an unhelpful pattern early, before it has taken hold of a whole innings, quarter or race.
- Interpersonal skill. They read teammates accurately, which changes how they communicate when things are tight and how much support the group can actually give one another.
- Decision-making. Emotion drives decisions far more than most athletes realise. A regulated athlete makes better choices in the moments that decide contests.
This is the same body of work we have applied to leadership and culture in organisations for more than twenty years. Sport simply makes the stakes visible and the feedback immediate.
