What is NLP and how is it used with athletes?
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) studies the relationship between the language we use, the patterns we run internally, and the results we get. In a sporting context it gives athletes a set of practical techniques for changing how a situation is experienced internally, which changes how they respond to it.
In practice this looks less mysterious than the name suggests. It might be building an anchor an athlete can trigger deliberately, changing the way a replayed mistake is stored so it loses its grip, or shifting the internal commentary that runs when things are not going well. These are precise techniques with specific steps, not affirmations or generic positive thinking.
We introduce NLP tools only where the group is ready for them, and always after the foundations of emotional awareness are in place. Athletes are given accessible techniques first, including box breathing and stress-response breathing, and we build from there based on where the group actually is rather than where a program plan says they should be.
