How is the Emotional Culture Deck (ECD) used with a sporting team?
The Emotional Culture Deck is a simple, engaging card-based tool that gives a playing group a structured way to talk about how they want to feel in order to succeed. Teams identify the emotions they want present, name the ones they want to avoid, and then work out the behaviours that actually create those conditions.
It works in sport for the same reason it works in organisations. Most teams have a values statement somewhere, and most players could not tell you what it means on a weekend when they are three goals down or need 6 runs from 2 balls. The deck moves the conversation from abstract language to something concrete and observable, and it does so in a way that feels natural rather than clinical.
The outputs are practical. A group leaves with a shared understanding of the emotional conditions they perform best in, an honest picture of what currently gets in the way, and specific behaviours they have agreed to hold each other to. It is also one of the safest entry points we have for a group that is sceptical about mindset work, because it starts with the team rather than the individual.
