How is Performance Mindset different from sports psychology?
Sports psychology is a clinical discipline delivered by registered psychologists, and it plays an important role, particularly where an athlete is dealing with a mental health concern or a diagnosed condition. Performance Mindset sits alongside that rather than replacing it. Our work is educational and developmental, focused on teaching practical mental skills to athletes who are well and who want to compete better.
The distinction shows up most clearly in what happens in the room. Rather than exploring history and diagnosis, we build capability. Athletes learn how their emotional state drives their behaviour, they practise concrete techniques for shifting that state, and they leave with a personal toolkit they can use in training the following week.
Our approach draws on emotional intelligence, neuroscience and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), translated from more than two decades of leadership and performance work with high-performing organisations into the world of sport. Where an athlete needs clinical support, we say so and help them find it. Everything else is skill development, delivered experientially.
