Step 5 - Building HR Credibility - Be A Leader
I have been twittering away for about a month now, and have come across all manner of blogs and research.  There have been some enlightening concepts, ideas that have sparked a negative reaction, and others that remind me of why I am passionate about organisation development and authentic relationships. The final step in this blog series,

is the importance of being a leader. AND it is NOT just about managers or executives being leaders, it’s about all of us being leaders no matter which box we sit in on the organisation chart.  Be the leader that you would want others to be.  Be a leader in your position, department, organisation and life.

Think of a leader that inspires you.  Close your eyes (once you finish reading this blog…) and imagine them standing in front of you. Notice how they walk, talk, stand, breath, smile. Look at how they speak to others, handle problems and go for goals. Make sure it is a colour picture, make it a movie, you can see their facial expressions, feel their emotions. Now move this picture closer and closer to yourself and step into it.  Become this leader – take on their attributes.  Practice this for two minutes every morning.

During the day, take the time to consider whether you are behaving in a way that reflects the values of the leader that inspires you.  If not, change your behaviours!  The only thing that we can be sure of is that we can change ourselves.  Having an idea of what behaviours you would like to exhibit provides a guide to changing yourself.  As always, make sure you enact these changes with authenticity and compassion.

A leader also understands their talents, skills and passions.  What are yours?  How are you utilizing them to their best ability for your organisation?  What limiting beliefs are you holding onto that are preventing you from being exceptional and what can you do about those?  Take some time to answer these questions and develop a personal development plan for yourself in line with your beliefs about being a leader.

The final comment I have to say about being a leader within your organisation, is take responsibility for yourself and your actions.  Consider the part that you play in every interaction within the organisation.  As HR and OD practitioners we spend a lot of time talking to people and having meetings.  Reflect on your relationships, reflect on the success of your projects and initiatives, reflect on the culture of the organisation and understand your role in it all.  Take responsibility for outcomes and move away from blame.  Take all feedback both self assessed and external as an opportunity to improve.  Inspire others with your approach and humility.

Model the behaviours that you want to see in others and be present in every interaction.  The ripple effect of your self awareness and personal development will surprise you.  And make sure you write a blog and twitter it to share your success with everyone else.
